Over eight years since the original first launched, Cities: Skylines 2 was announced by Colossal Order. It’s fairly large, with leaked Achievements indicating 150 Map Tiles. The developer revealed more about the project, its “most ambitious” to date, on Twitter in response to fan questions.

Cities: Skylines 2 has been in development for a “few years” and still developed in Unity, despite theories to the contrary. As for whether assets available in the current Workshop would transfer over, the developer said the sequel is “an entirely new game. Existing Workshop content would likely need to be remade or adapted.” It promised more information about modding in the future.

Though the sequel expands on “every mechanic in the franchise,” there won’t be multiplayer, at least not in the short-term, as the team focuses on single-player. “Adding multiplayer support takes an incredible amount of time and resources that would take away from building the core play experience we are striving to create.”

Plans could change later but don’t hold your breath. On the bright side, it’s good news for fans of the base game.

Cities: Skylines 2 is out this year for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
