Mystery and time-traveling shenanigans are at the heart of Bloober Team’s next survival horror title, Cronos: The New Dawn. Perhaps the biggest surrounds the core premise of extracting the Essence of key individuals at the behest of the Collective. In a new story deep dive, lead writer/narrative designer Grzegorz Like and producer Klaudia Sewera confirmed that you can choose who to extract.

While your targets will perish in agonizing ways (since you’re effectively removing their souls), the Essences offer different perks for the gameplay-minded. Depending on who you extract, your perception of the whole game will change. Perhaps this ties into the multiple endings and how it’s up to the player to decide which is good or bad.

Of course, there’s also New Game Plus, which will offer a higher difficulty level to pursue. Maybe you can extract everyone’s Essence in one playthrough for a potential leg-up in the next? Time will tell.

Cronos: The New Dawn launches on September 5th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Gamescom attendees can go hands-on with a playable demo from August 20th to 24th.
