Cyberpunk 2 Director Had An “Idea in the Beginning,” But “It Evolves As I Involve More People”

As much as CD Projekt RED has discussed The Witcher 4, even if it’s seemingly two years off, it’s been fairly coy about the next entry in the Cyberpunk franchise. We’re left with the odd morsel here and there; however, in a new blog post on the studio’s official website, game director Gabe Amatangelo shared something interesting: His idea of Cyberpunk 2 has seemingly evolved as more people became involved.

Asked about what cyberpunk means to him, Amatangelo noted, “It’s my childhood. Questioning things was just part of my growing up. And the cyber part of it is both exaggeration and expression, neon lights and loud noises. It’s about exploring the extremes of dehumanization.”

But he’s not necessarily sticking to the same definition for the sequel. “I had the idea of Cyberpunk 2 in the beginning, but it evolves as I involve more people. And it evolves as I empower the team and individuals within them to contribute. It becomes something else, right? It becomes this thing that I’ve shepherded, but it’s ultimately a reflection of the team’s hearts and souls. And I look forward to sharing that.”

When that will be remains up in the air. After all, Cyberpunk 2 entered pre-production in May 2025, and CD Projekt RED is aiming to have more than 450 developers by next year. Nevertheless, Amatangelo believes, “This medium of playing a video game — being immersed in a world — makes a story feel more real and impactful. It allows players, and us as developers, to experience something unique, and see other perspectives in a way that no other medium can do.

“Video games impacted my life. They opened my mind and got me motivated and excited. And I want to make sure that doesn’t go away for this generation or the next.”

Based on a job listing, Cyberpunk 2 could be a first-person title like its predecessor, which makes sense, given how creative director Igor Sarzyński talked about preferring the “uninterrupted immersion” of the base game and Phantom Liberty. And that’s even if setting up cutscenes would be “extremely pleasant.”

Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith has confirmed that Night City is “still there” in the sequel, but that players will visit another city. He compared it to “Chicago gone wrong” rather than something like Blade Runner. What that may be, and whether players will still revisit their old stomping grounds, is unknown, but after seeing the developer’s vision, he remarked, “Yeah, I can see this working.”
