It’s been quite the roller-coaster for CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077. Upon launching as perhaps the most anticipated game of the year, numerous issues with the PS4 and Xbox One versions spurred controversy. While Sony took to delisting the title from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft is offering full refunds while providing a warning for the game’s performance on the Xbox Store.

According to Waypoint’s Patrick Klepek, it seems that refunds for physical copies for the game are opening up at GameStop. “Multiple GameStop employees have shown me a memo indicating the company is now accepting returns of Cyberpunk 2077, even if it’s been opened.” As for whether the refunds affected overall sales figures, Klepek notes that, “It would be reasonable to think the refunds are in the hundreds of thousands, at least. Whether the game is no longer profitable, I don’t know? In unprecedented territory.”

Internally, things haven’t been looking too good for CD Projekt RED. Its founders lost over $1 billion due to the game’s buggy launch. Development team members are also reportedly upset at management, questioning the overall unrealistic nature of deadlines. The company could also be facing a potential lawsuit due to “misrepresentation to receive financial benefits.”

The company has pledged to improve previous-gen console versions with major updates planned for January and February 2021. Hotfix 1.05 went live for all platforms recently and offered a host of bug fixes. As for the long-term future of Cyberpunk 2077, time will ultimately tell.
