Destiny 2 PC Bans Weren’t Automatic, 400 Players Banned So Far

Bungie clarifies bans that recently occurred for the PC version (and overturns a few erroneous ones).

Destiny 2 (10)

When Destiny 2 launched for PC yesterday, a number of bans hit PC players who couldn’t understand why. Many thought it was due to third party apps that provided overlays (like Discord) but Bungie quickly verified that this wasn’t the case.

Bungie has now offered an official statement on the whole deal and noted that 400 players were banned on PC for “using tools that pose a threat to the shared ecosystem of the game”. “Destiny 2 cannot automatically ban you, only Bungie can ban a player after a manual investigation. We did not (and will not) issue any bans for the use of overlays or performance tools, including Discord, Xsplit, OBS, RTSS, etc.”

It also noted that four bans that were issued during the PC beta have been overturned along with a “group of players who were banned in error” for the full release. Once again, Bungie confirmed that the erroneous bans for the latter group were not due to running third party apps (a comprehensive list of the same offered here).

What explicitly caused the first 400 bans? It’s not surprising if Bungie doesn’t reveal those details, especially since it would help other potential rabble-rousers know what to avoid. For the most part, it seems that anything capable of injecting code into the game or messing about with config files is a potential threat. So keep that in mind when messing about in Destiny 2.
