Dragon Quest 12 Beyond Dreams

The Dragon Quest team at Square Enix, specifically executive producer Yosuke Saito and series creator Yuji Horii, finally provided an update on Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate. Or rather, Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams, as it’s now known, complete with a new logo and teaser of what the new setting has to offer.

What happened? Due to a reshuffling of the team and the original version facing a “lot of hurdles,” per Saito, development has restarted, and the team is working from scratch. It promises “plenty of things never seen in a Dragon Quest game,” but long-time fans can still expect character designs by the late Akira Toriyama and music by the late Koichi Sugiyama.

As for the story, it focuses on a new protagonist beset by “strange visions.” He seemingly pursues answers, and Horii teases that they could lead to a bright future, even if there’s some darkness along the way. In the meantime, the environments look pretty great, whether it’s the forests, deserts or beaches.

We also get a peek at two other characters – a woman skilled with technology who has some kind of floating bike and robot minions, and a lizard-like warrior later seen in red armor. The protagonist also battles an armored dragon several times his size without backing down.

It may be a while before Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams launches, and the vision has changed significantly, but Horii believes that fans will “love it.” Stay tuned for more updates, hopefully before the series’ 45th anniversary.
