Dragon’s Dogma 2 Has Sold Over 4 Million Units, But a New Expansion Remains a Pipe Dream

Despite reaching a new sales milestone, the action RPG has a "Mixed" rating on Steam, with recent reviews expressing displeasure.

Creator/director Hideaki Itsuno is gone from Capcom, but his last major work, Dragon’s Dogma 2, continues to sell. The open-world action RPG crossed four million units as of November 5th, according to a new tweet by the publisher.

According to the Platinum Titles list, it sold 3.9 million units as of September 30th, so it’s sold more than 100,000 since then. Not the most impressive total, to be sure, though Capcom’s other big release for the year, Monster Hunter Wilds, isn’t doing so hot either.

Despite extensive critical acclaim for Dragon’s Dogma 2 (we gave it a ten in our review), it was bogged down by extensive performance issues, especially on PC. Subsequent updates would improve the CPU load across all platforms and improve the frame rate, with consoles also receiving Prioritize Graphics and Performance Modes.

Unfortunately, it still has a “Mixed” rating on Steam with 61 percent of the nearly 73,000 user reviews voicing their approval. Some of the more notable criticisms target the enemy variety and story, but one user calls it, “Unfinished and abandoned. Now they’re celebrating the 4 million copies sold instead of improving/fixing the game.”

Capcom did ask users if they’d like to see DLC for the title, but there’s been radio silence ever since, even before Itsuno’s departure. Where it goes from here remains to be seen, but at least the series received a sequel, rather than languishing in history (see: Mega Man).
