PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Microtransactions
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has had its share of controversies this year but perhaps the biggest is when it decided to add microtransactions for keys to its Gamescom Invitational Crates. The idea behind these wasn’t awful – the crates would go towards the prize pool for an invitational tournament at Gamescom and the rest would be donated for free. After this, all cosmetics would be free again. However, when you factor in how creator Brendan “Playerunknown” Green said there would be no micro-transactions ever and the game was still in Early Access, players got mad. And others got mad at those players because your appearance anyway changes several minutes into a match anyway. It was one big kerfuffle to say the least.
