Final Fantasy 16 – Square Enix Considers Initial Sales to be “Extremely Strong”

It addressed the disparity in sales compared to previous titles like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and noted the high attach rate on PS5.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 16 has done well, selling over three million units worldwide within its launch week and garnering extensive critical acclaim. However, there is some concern that it’s lagging behind previous titles, like Final Fantasy 15, which shipped five million units on its first day or Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which sold over 3.5 million in three days on PS4.

Speaking to IGN, Square Enix noted the disparity in sales between Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s launch sales on PS4 versus Final Fantasy 16 on PS5. “With 38 million PS5 consoles shipped globally (as of March 31, 2023), sales of Final Fantasy 16 surpassed three million units worldwide several days after its release on June 22, 2023.

“Taking into consideration the sales figures of the acclaimed Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the size difference in the install base of the PlayStation 4 at the time of this title’s release, we can see that the attach rate of Final Fantasy 16 is considerably high, given the PS5 install base.

“Square Enix considers the initial sales results of Final Fantasy 16 to be extremely strong, and we will continue to carry out a wide range of initiatives to encourage even more people to play the game.”

Of course, time will tell what those initiatives are, especially with the publisher “thinking about options” for new content, per producer Naoki Yoshida. He noted the feedback from players who wanted “to see more,” and hoped “we can have something that we can give to you all” shortly.

Final Fantasy 16 is available exclusively for PS5. Check out our review here. It’s timed console exclusive for six months, and Yoshida has expressed interest in a PC port, though it won’t arrive immediately after the exclusivity period ends.
