Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Tops Japanese Retail Charts with Over 262,000 Units Sold

However, its physical launch sales in the region are significantly lower than Final Fantasy 16's, and even more so when compared to Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

As per the latest weekly software and hardware sales data for Japan released by FamitsuFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth has debuted on top of newest Japanese charts, which should surprise no one. The widely acclaimed action RPG sold over 262,000 physical units in Japan on debut, but while that may seem like an impressive number on isolation, it’s actually surprisingly low by Final Fantasy standards.

In comparison, upon its launch in 2020, Final Fantasy 7 Remake sold over 702,000 physical units in Japan, while last year’s Final Fantasy 16 managed over 336,000 units. Of course, Rebirth has launched exclusively for a platform with a much smaller install base than what the PS4 had in Japan when Remake launched. Then again, that doesn’t explain the drop from the launch sales of Final Fantasy 16, which also launched exclusively for PS5, and with an even smaller install base.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth also saw a drop in its physical launch sales in the UK. Then again, the game has received universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike, so Square Enix will likely be hoping that it sees consistent, prolonged sales, even if it doesn’t seem to have started as well as its predecessors.

Meanwhile, on the hardware front, the Nintendo Switch was once again the best-selling console in Japan last week. It even enjoyed a noticeable increase in sales from last week, selling over 62,000 units (up from over 50,000 units the preceding week). PS5 followed behind in second place with over 48,000 units sold.
