Here's hoping it doesn't take another five years.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake finally released earlier this month after several years of anticipation, and it’s fair to say that it more than lived up to expectations. Anticipation for its sequel is already sky-high, especially given how it ends. Clearly, the wait for the second part of the remake project is going to be a tough one, but Square Enix on their part seem to be doing everything they can to ensure that there isn’t too much of a gap separating the launch of the first game and that of its sequel.

Speaking recently to Entertainment WeeklyFinal Fantasy 7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase said that work on the next instalment of the project is already underway. “Development is already moving forward for the next game in the [Final Fantasy] remake project,” he said. Not too long ago, Kitase suggested the same, saying that Square Enix would move on to production of the next game as soon as the first one was out.

One would assume that the next game will be larger and more open-ended than the first one, since it won’t just be limited to Midgar, so it should be interesting to see how long its development take. Another factor to take into consideration is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced developers around the world to work remotely. How much of an impact that will have on efficiency ad productivity in the long-term remains to be seen.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is out now on PS4, and might also be headed to PC (but not before April 2021 at the earlier). Within the first three days of its launch, the game managed to sell 3.5 million units worldwide.
