Despite its absence at The Game Awards – and really every other showcase since then – The Coalition’s Gears of War: E-Day is making progress towards its 2026 release. In a “Thank You” post on Xbox Wire from Xbox Game Studios, the studio said it’s looking forward to sharing more next year.
After all, it’s the 20th anniversary of the series, and Gears of War: E-Day is the studio’s “most ambitious game yet.” It’s “entirely built from scratch in Unreal Engine 5” to feel like the Gears that everyone knows and loves while playing “like new.”
“This is a return to our roots as Marcus and Dom face the Locust for the first time ever. It’s the best place to jump into the Gears universe, and we can’t wait to share more next year.”
Gears of War: E-Day takes place around Emergence Day when the Locust, a subterranean threat residing within the planet Sera, “emerged” and waged war on humanity. Suffice it to say that the latter, worn down from fighting among each other for Imulsion, is unprepared. While offering a linear campaign, E-Day is perhaps more notable for returning to a more horror-centric atmosphere.
The Xbox Developer_Direct is coming up in January 2026, so perhaps we’ll learn more at the show. Thus far, Playground Games is confirmed to appear – Forza Horizon 6 seems a given, but it’s unknown if we’ll see Fable.
