Ghost of Yōtei is the Same Length as Ghost of Tsushima, Says Co-Director

Sucker Punch's Jason Connell assures there will be a wider variety of activities but says the team values the story "so much."

Whether it’s the rich, expansive environments, epic story of revenge or open-world structure, Ghost of Yōtei looks to be a lengthy game. However, those expecting something that will dwarf Ghost of Tsushima should somewhat temper their expectations. Co- director Jason Connell told VGC in a new interview that the overall length will be similar.

According to HowLongToBeat, Tsushima’s story requires an average of 25 hours to complete. With extra content, it can easily take 46 hours, which is not too shabby. However, this will seemingly vary in Yōtei based on the player’s approach, and you can expect a greater variety of activities throughout.

Also, despite Sucker Punch providing more freedom, Connell is adamant that the team won’t “abandon the structure of the story.” “One of the things I love about the Ghost franchise is that there are a whole bunch of options to make it your experience. We have this approachable, samurai cinema-inspired game, and so the trick for us as developers is to create a game that provides that extra level of creative freedom we strive for, allowing players to enjoy it, while at the same time, we’re never going to abandon the structure of the story.

“It’s very difficult to have a story with no structure. You’re going to have a beginning, middle, and an end, so while Atsu’s journey is to hunt down the Yōtei Six, by no means are we going to let you go and kill all six with no story structure. We value the story so much.”

Unlike Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei will see Atsu gathering information on the different targets and following leads, which can take her to drastically different areas. As such, you likely have other tasks to complete before finally fighting them. Depending on the leads pursued, players will find new weapon types, upgrades, and more, shaping their playstyle and journey in different ways from the outset.

Launching on October 2nd, Ghost of Yōtei will be available exclusively for PS5. Check out our feature for more details on what to expect (including the significance of camping on the entire experience).
