It was recently announced that a God of War TV series has been officially greenlit by Prime Video, with Amazon, Sony Pictures, and PlayStation Productions co-producing an adaptation of the 2018 action-adventure game. Given the game’s popularity and widespread success, it goes without saying that there’s plenty of excitement surrounding it- which, of course, goes hand-in-hand with a bevy of questions.

For instance, how is the TV show going to approach the game in terms of how faithfully it sticks to it and what liberties it takes in the changes and additions it makes? Specific details aren’t plentiful right now, of course, but according to Amazon Studios’ head of television Vernon Sanders, though the TV series will be welcoming for those who’ve never played the game, it’s also going to be “incredibly true to the source material”.

Speaking in an interview with Collider, Sanders said, “At the center of it all is this story of fathers and sons, and families, set against this giant epic landscape. So what Rafe [Judkins] (showrunner) and Mark [Fergus] and Hawk [Ostby] (writers) have come up with for the first season, and for the series, I think, is both incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own. If you never played the game, you will fall in love with the show and feel very much invited in. So we think it’s going to be huge.”

While God of War is in the early stages of production, Sony does have another major adaptation on the horizon, with HBO’s The Last of Us series set to premiere on January 15. Meanwhile, Horizon Netflix series and film adaptations of Ghost of Tsushima and Gran Turismo are also in the works, among others.
