Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 will cost $80 at launch. This is for the Standard Edition; the Ultimate Edition retails for $100. Furthermore, this is just for the “single-player experience,” with no word yet on multiplayer or a GTA Online equivalent.
But the pricing is interesting for several reasons, as several analysts discussed it months in advance. Before he joined Xbox as its chief strategy officer, Matthew Ball said that GTA 6 retailing for $80 to $100 would shatter a “key price barrier” for the industry, prompting more titles to increase prices to answer inflation.
Meanwhile, Bank of America said that it should cost $80 for the good of the industry. Granted, it will benefit Take-Two Interactive’s bottom line more than anything else, but there’s hope that it will bolster PS5 and Xbox Series X/S sales.
Of course, this marks the second major title in recent years to cost $80. Nintendo’s Mario Kart World was the first, and despite backlash, it seemed to work out with 14.7 million sales in its first year.
Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19th for Xbox Series X/S and PS5, with pre-orders going live at midnight local time on June 25th. You can pre-load the title starting on November 12th, though physical edition owners won’t have a disc to play.
