The notion that a game is so big that even one of its creators might not have seen everything it has to offer might have been met with an amused smile even a month ago, but we tuned into that premiere of Grand Theft Auto 6’s gameplay from last week.
That showed us a lot of things to do, and a myriad of ways to let Vice City’s energy take you in a direction you didn’t intend. Well, Rob Nelson, Rockstar North studio co-head and the game’s head of development, has told IGN that given the game’s long development cycle, it’s unlikely that there’s a single individual on the team who has seen it in its full scope.
“I think the challenge for us on this game is the same as it is on any new game for us. How do we evolve and build upon the good things we have done before in all the ways these things need to evolve?… The game is so big; I don’t know that there’s anybody on the team that knows all of it.”
Well, it’s clear we’re stepping into uncharted waters when we’re let loose in the city later this year, and we’re going to engage with a world that’s hand-crafted to make us part of it early on. That probably explains why no one who’s made it has seen the final product in all its glory. The fact that it’s as big as Rockstar’s claim, even with cut features, shows this is a game that will keep us coming back for a while.
It isn’t long before we can fill that GTA 6-shaped void in our lives when it launches on November 19th.
