Odessa Cubbage takes the credit for destroying the battleships
Odessa Cubbage is not your average military leader, because as evidenced in Half Life 2, he would rather talk than actually fight. When Gordon destroys the two battleships, he simply sends Freeman on his way, telling members of his team to open the gate allowing Gordon to travel further along the coast. However in Episode 1, Odessa seems to have taken the credit for destroying the two battleships, as referenced when people ask Gordon if he was there when Cubbage took down the first Combine gunship. Incidentally Odessa can be seen speaking with the G-Man by looking towards the base through Combine Binoculars on the opposite end of the bay.
