MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle features first-person shooting, platforming, puzzle-solving, and melee combat. However, it’s an action-adventure game at heart, with both linear and large open areas. While there are numerous secrets and things to discover, the developer confirmed that players can revisit previous areas.

While speaking to IGN at Gamescom, design director Jens Andersson said, “Because it’s so open-ended, we are thinking about replayability a little bit differently than, for example, the Wolfenstein titles. In this game we allow you to go back and revisit previous areas to really explore all the content there is there.”

A completionist run of the title involves filling Indy’s journey, where all the notes and photos are logged. “The idea is that when that’s fully complete… that’s when you’ve 100 percented the game and seen everything it offers.”

Andersson also clarified that the ability to revisit previous areas is similar to a Chapter Select feature. Any unlocked equipment and skills can be brought back with you. While it’s described as a “narrative break in some ways,” most of the content is “optional.”

“The story is really important, and for the people who just want to explore that, the game will be shorter. But for the people who want to experience everything, there are a lot of things to explore and it’s a really big game.”

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle launches on December 9th for PC and Xbox Series X/S, with Premium and Collector’s Edition owners receiving three days of early access. It’s also launching in Spring 2025 for PS5. There will be more details revealed during today’s Xbox @ Gamescom 2024 livestream at 6 AM PST, so stay tuned.
