Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price has revealed that the most stressful time for the studio was when it wasn’t working with Sony to create games. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Price referred to the time in the early 2010s when Insomniac had worked with other companies, including EA for the title Fuse and Microsoft for Sunset Overdrive.

“I think the most stressful period was when we had moved away from working with Sony, and we were getting comfortable with working with other partners who had completely different approaches than we did,” said Price when asked about the most stressful period for Insomniac under his tenure as CEO. “I think we had become so compatible with Sony in terms of our approach and philosophies, that it was a little bit of a shock, and took some adjusting to work with other our approach and philosophies that it was a little bit of a shock; and it took some adjusting to work with other publishers, and that can be distracting, when you’re trying to get games out the door.”

“I think for every developer-publisher relationship, it takes time to mature and get to a place where both parties are comfortable,” he continued. “And during that period when we weren’t working as closely with Sony, we didn’t give it enough time; we didn’t give ourselves a lot of time with these other publishers before we ultimately went back to Sony. But at the same time, I think we knew what we were looking for, and we knew that from the beginning we had the best and most compatible partner we had always been Sony.”

For context, Insomniac Games had originally started making a name for itself with early titles like the Spyro the Dragon franchise and Ratchet & Clank. After a run with the Resistance franchise, the studio decided to diversify its portfolio of games, partnering up with EA for action title Fuse. After the Xbox One-exclusive (at the time) Sunset Overdrive, the studio teamed back up with Sony to make the Marvel’s Spider-Man games as well as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

Currently, Insomniac Games works as an internal studio with Sony as a first party developer for PlayStation. The studio recently worked with Nixxes to release Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC, and is currently developing Marvel’s Wolverine.

Earlier this year, Ted Price announced that he would retiring from his leadership position at Insomniac Games. Price, having worked with the studio since its founding all the way back in 1994, has been the CEO for more than 30 years. Price will be leaving Insomniac Games by the end of March.

Taking on Price’s mantle at Insomniac will be former head of creative Chad Dezern, former head of brand and leadership strategy Ryan Schneider, and former CFO Jen Huang. The three will act as co-leads for Insomniac moving forward.
