Mafia: The Old Country’s latest gameplay trailer showcases a lot of action, from car/horse chases to shootouts with enemies. However, Hangar 13 is going for a “life-or-death” vibe with the combat, which means being more tactical in your approach.
Associate game director Joshua Zammit stated in a recent Developer Insights video that since Enzo is “proving himself with guns,” there’s “a scarcity of resources.” “So you have to be more tactical in the way you approach combat.”
This is where the knife comes in, allowing you to sneak up and silently execute enemies. However, you’ll also engage in knife fights, further adding to the “life-or-death” vibe.
“The knife has been an integral part of gameplay. It’s a part of Sicilian culture. We want our gameplay to be immersive, to have a life-or-death kind of vibe. So when players are in a knife duel, when they’re in a gunfight, they’re genuinely fearing for their lives,” said Zammit.
Mafia: The Old Country launches on August 8th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Unlike Mafia 3, it follows a more linear structure with a tight narrative set in 1900s Sicily and revolving around Enzo Favara as the main character. It retails for $49.99, with the Deluxe Edition costing $59.99. Head here for more details.
Hangar 13 is also hosting a Developer Panel at PAX East today at 11 AM PST, where it will reveal more information. However, it promises even more updates between now and launch, so stay tuned.
