Since Bungie’s acquisition by Sony, there has been an undercurrent of tension surrounding the studio’s upcoming multiplayer game Marathon potentially needing players to have PlayStation accounts on non-PlayStation platforms. The studio has now confirmed that there will be no PlayStation account requirements for Marathon players on PC and Xbox Series X/S.

Spotted by social media platform X user KAMI, the studio revealed on its Discord channel that players don’t have to worry about PlayStation accounts. The answer came in response to a user’s question about whether they will have to use PSN despite not playing on a PS5.

“Marathon will not require a PlayStation Account for players on PC and Xbox,” posted the Marathon team on its Discord.

Marathon is an extraction shooter under development by the studio behind games like the original Halo trilogy and Destiny 2. The title was originally announced all the way back in 2023, and while Bungie has confirmed that it won’t be a direct sequel to the classic 1990s Marathon trilogy, it will carry forward the franchise’s “mythology, story, and themes” in the upcoming game.

More details about Marathon are slated to be revealed over a weekend. Bungie announced this with a Save the Date trailer, which also gave us another look at some of the upcoming shooter’s visuals. Rumours have also been floating around of Marathon potentially being released in 2025. No details about this have been revealed so far, however.

Bungie’s announcement of a dedicated Marathon showcase came about after rumours of it happening from all the way back in February. Talking about why Marathon wasn’t present during Sony’s State of Play presentation at the time, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb spoke about how the studio typically prefers to have its own showcases for its games like Destiny.

“Bungie does their own thing usually for Destiny, they’re going to adopt that same ‘We’re talking to our audience’ strategy this year as well, so I think April,” said Grubb. “We’ll probably hear from them about Marathon, and it would just be its own thing separate from a State of Play.”

The studio has also been seemingly primed for a proper release date announcements, since it has been making quite a few updates to the Marathon entry in the Steam database. Spotted just last month, a recent update to Marathon‘s database entry added a host of “app types” that players will potentially be able to purchase. This likely indicates microtransaction content, a battle pass, or even future expansion passes, as is typically the tradition with Destiny 2.

While not too many details about Marathon have been revealed so far, we have had director Joe Ziegler giving us a glimpse at some of the playable characters from the game. Dubbed Runners, the two characters shown off by Ziegler were Thief and Stealth.

Marathon is currently under development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. If you’re curious about the themes and mythology the upcoming multiplayer shooter will likely tackle, you can check out the original trilogy of classic shooters, which are now available for free on PC through Steam.
