Marvel’s Avengers – Prequel Comic Sets Up In-Game Story

Marvel's Avengers: Iron Man #1 teases uneasy relations between the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. and the public.

Marvel's Avengers

There are a bevy of big-name titles releasing next year and Marvel’s Avengers from Square Enix is arguably the biggest. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, it offers a massive triple-A experience where players control the Avengers. Each has their own unique style and four players can team up together for superhero hijinx.

So it makes sense that Marvel would have a set of comics to help set up the story before launch. Marvel’s Avengers: Iron Man #1, written by Jim Zub with Paco Diaz handling the art, focuses on Tony Stark. As Zub said to Marvel.com, “The relationship between the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. and the public at large is not a simple one in the Marvel’s Avengers game and this story helps set up some of those dynamics and teases tensions to come as Tony tries to figure out who he can trust and deal with the Lethal Legion at the same time.”

That would explain some of the trepidation that Stark has working with his old allies (though there’s still the A-Day tragedy looming in the background). In-game, it’s Kamala Khan aka the current Miss Marvel who goes about bringing the Avengers back together. Note that Miss Marvel is different from Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel who is confirmed to exist in the game’s universe. Perhaps she’s working with S.H.I.E.L.D. in some capacity?

Marvel’s Avengers launches on May 15th 2020 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. The game will have post-launch content in the form of new characters. Post-launch support and co-op will receive new details after the holidays as per Crystal Dynamics so stay tuned for more information.
