MindsEye Uses a Frantic Camera to Let Players Feel Like They Are “On the Edge of Control”

Build A Rocket Boy is currently hard at work on its upcoming action game, MindsEye. Assistant game director Adam Whiting has revealed that the linear action title will make use of a frantic style of camera that will make players feel like they are teetering on the edge of losing all control of the game. In an interview with Edge (via GamesRadar), Whiting referred to the game being inspired by the Fast & Furious movie franchise.

According to Whiting, when players are involved in, for example, a high-speed car chase, “the camera detaches as you take corners at high speeds to make you feel like you’re on the edge of control, almost like you’re in a Fast & Furious film.”

While the camera might feel like it is constantly on the verge of tearing apart from the player’s control, Whiting explained that players will have full, precise control over the camera. On the gameplay side of things, Whiting also explained that players will be able to pull off precise maneuvers like threading the throttle, the brake, and the handbrake together in order to stay in control of their car at all times.

In the interview, Whiting explained that the game’s vehicle controls were designed through Unreal Engine 5.4, with plenty of thought having gone into various aspects of how a vehicle controls, including tyre grip, suspension, and even weight transfer.

MindsEye is slated for release on June 10, and will be coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Priced at $59.99, the game is being developed by Build A Rocket Boy – a studio helmed by Leslie Benzies, who has formerly worked with Rockstar North. The title is slated to be the studio’s first major release.

The release date was confirmed back in March along with a trailer that showcased some of the antagonistic forces that players will have to face during their time in the game’s setting of Redrock City. Some of the characters shown off include Silva Industries founder Marco Silver, and mayor of the city Vega.

Two more trailers were released for the game back in February, with one focusing on the game’s story, while the other revealed the frantic action gameplay. MindsEye is said to focus on a number of themes, with the studio mentioning artificial intelligence, human greed, and the battle for control being central to the game’s story.

In March, Whiting revealed that MindsEye will take players around 15 hours to finish. He also spoke about the studio’s focus on creating a game that is well-paced, and features a well-crafted story that players can feel good about finishing.

“I understand that the landscape has changed, and, you know, games are so expensive to make I think that people are trying to build like, you know, big life service games,” explained Whiting. “But I think there’s something to be said about just like a really meaningful, well-paced, really well-constructed, well-crafted story that players can immerse themselves in, that’s got moments of tension, character development, tender moments, and then moments of spectacle and drama.”
