With rumors of Sony potentially hosting a State of Play showcase this week flying around, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson believes that we might get to see the next mainline God of War game at the event. In a recent episode of the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, the hosts discussed what games could be showcased during the unconfirmed State of Play, including the idea that it could be a third-party-focused showcase.

While he acknowledged the third-party focus rumors, Henderson went on to note that, “I also heard separately, like last month, that the God of War was due to be announced very soon, and in April.” While the other hosts speculate about whether this reveal could be slated for June instead, Henderson went on to talk about whether this State of Play will also feature first-party reveals. “I’m just wondering if the State of Play is going to be third-party only, or if it’s going to be a State of Play where they also announce God of War. I know that [Insomniac Games] keep saying on Twitter that they’re going to announce something in Spring, so that could also line up with another [Marvel’s Wolverine] trailer.”

“I don’t know, but there’s definitely too much smoke,” he said, referring to the number of rumors going around about Sony’s slate of first-party games.

The hosts also go on to discuss whether, similar to games like Ghost of Yōtei, Sony will decide to host a separate State of Play event dedicated to just Marvel’s Wolverine, leaving this rumored State of Play to focus on third-party games.

Rumors about the State of Play this week—expected to take place on April 16th—came about over the weekend courtesy of industry insider NateTheHate. While there were already reports of Sony planning another showcase before its big one in June, in a recent social media post, he wrote about the event’s date, noting that it was “unconfirmed”. In a follow-up post, NateTheHate also stated that this State of Play “Sounds more third-party focused; but I’m not 100% certain.”

While details about what this new mainline entry in the God of War franchise might look like, there have been reports giving us vague hints about the title. Among these was one from March, which indicated that it would star Faye—wife of God of War protagonist Kratos—as the protagonist. Since her death starts off the story of God of War (2018), however, where this entry would fall in the timeline remains to be seen.

The report has also indicated that it will be more action-oriented than the two recent God of War entries based on Norse mythology. Since the games had also revealed that his Leviathan Axe once belonged to Faye, we will likely see the weapon return in some form.

Interestingly, a God of War Ragnarök datamine from back in February seemingly discovered hidden cutscenes, which could provide hints about where the franchise will go next. Among the characters featured in these cutscenes was Athena, who was discussing the events of God of War Ragnarök with other “beings from the higher plane”.
