No Rest for the Wicked

No Rest for the Wicked from Moon Studios launches for PC via Steam Early Access on April 18th, and a roadmap has already been laid out. However, several details and gameplay were also revealed during the Wicked Inside Showcase, including the opening section. Check it out below.

As a Cerin venturing to Isola Sacra to combat the Pestilence, players end up shipwrecked and washed ashore with no weapons or armor. You’ll have to scavenge these and other items, which makes exploring and uncovering secrets – like chests with oils – all the more worthwhile. The world is hand-crafted with no procedural generation, but loot is randomized, providing a different experience for each player.

Loot falls into four rarities – White, Blue, Purple and Gold – but they work differently from other action RPGs. White is Common but also the most customizable. Blue is Rare and offers high Enchantment stats. Purple provides very high Enchantment stats, but it’s Cursed with a negative stat. Finally, there’s Gold, which offers unique Enchantments.

Isola Sacra is hand-painted and features day/night cycles with dynamic weather. The environments are highly interactive, from vines to climb to thin logs that require balancing your weight to traverse. Combat is “animation-driven” and weighty, with ARPGs and fighting games serving as inspiration. Your character’s weight plays a part in movement – a lighter build means quick-stepping, which consumes less stamina, while a medium build can dodge-roll for more.

Players can equip different Runes, which provide various special attacks. Since there’s a soft class system in place, nothing stops you from picking up a two-handed staff and playing a Mage with three Rune specials, namely Blink, Fireball and Nova (an AoE blast skill).

Eventually, players will arrive at Sacrament, the capital town of Isola Sacra. Players can take on projects to help rebuild it, like helping the smithy, which allows upgrading gear to a higher level. You can also purchase a house to craft items and stash loot Resources from the wild can be used to create new gear and furniture.

Interestingly, the world evolves as you revisit areas with new threats to face and resources to scavenge. Regions reportedly change each time you visit. Finally, there’s the Cerin Crucible – the endgame where players test their mettle against some of the most challenging enemies.

Stay tuned for more details on No Rest for the Wicked, also coming to Xbox Series X/S and PS5.
