One of my most anticipated games of the year, Frictional Games’ Ontos, unfortunately was delayed to 2027. While there’s still no release date, it premiered some new gameplay, highlighting the “decisions” you can make.
How do you remove plugs from an unwitting individual’s head, especially when their consciousness is connected to a bunch of rats? The developer notes that you have a variety of choices, whether it’s choosing a different approach, following instructions or sabotaging it for the sake of hilarity. It’s up to you, but as always, consequences abound, and they may not always be immediately apparent.
Ontos is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, and thus far, its teasers have been as ethereal as they are unsettling. It starts as a series of experiments by protagonist Aditi Amani involving her father’s work, but things quickly spiral in a reality-changing fashion.
Beyond messing around with analog systems and discovering unique solutions, you’ll explore Samsara in all its bizarre glory. If it can live up to the existential horror of Soma, then Ontos may be something special indeed. Thankfully, some more hands-on gameplay will premiere on August 26th courtesy of YouTuber Jacksepticeye. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
