After numerous requests from fans, Blizzard Entertainment has finally announced a Role Queue system for Overwatch. In a recent developer update video, director Jeff Kaplan confirmed that players would be able to queue up for a specific role. Teams in each match will be locked to two Support, two Damage dealers, and two Tanks.

Currently live on the Public Test Realm server, Role Queue will be available for both Quick Play and Competitive. It’s been in development for more than a year, and will look to provide higher quality matches, where players can take the roles they’re comfortable with. Once a role is chosen and you’ve queued into the game, you can only change Heroes within that role.

So that means no changing from Mercy to Reaper, or from Baptiste to Sombra. Interestingly, Blizzard is also ensuring that each role has its own Skill Rating and Placement Matches in Competitive. There will be Top 500 leaderboards for each role, and even for one’s overall Skill Rating across all roles. Check out the developer update below for more information.
