Path of Exile: The Forbidden Sanctum Gameplay Revealed, Adds Roguelike Game Mode

Explore the Sanctum below Fellshrine Ruins, spending Resolve to traverse unique layouts while suffering Afflictions and Accursed Pacts.

Path of Exile - The Forbidden Sanctum_02

Grinding Gear Games has revealed The Forbidden Sanctum, the next expansion and Challenge League for Path of Exile. It sees players venturing into the Sanctum below the Fellshrine Ruins, with a few rooms and their rewards revealed. As you progress, your Resolve reduces, and the run ends. There are four floors in total to explore.

As you explore, there will be some rooms that restore some Resolve, while others curse you with Afflictions. Afflictions keep stacking as you explore, though some boons can be discovered as well. The Sanctum changes its layout each time, but as confirmed in a tweet, players can save up to eight consecutive rooms (one floor) to revisit later.

The Sanctum yields Aureus as currency in treasure chests and from slaying monsters. They can’t be taken outside and spent at a merchant that appears now and then, selling boons. Accursed Pacts grant significant power but have big drawbacks. If this is starting to sound a lot like Curse of the Dead Gods, you’d be correct.

Templar Relics are also available, which persist between runs and grant you more power. Choose the right ones to explore deeper, until you find Sanctified Relics. They’ll stay with you outside of the Sanctum and can provide a Templar’s power, affecting your build. Of course, along with enemies, there are bosses. Each floor ends with a boss with random mini-bosses in between until you face off against the Big Bad.
