Though it previously revealed 82.2 million units had been shipped to retailers as of July 31st, Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed 81.2 million PS4 consoles have sold through to customers as of July 22nd. It’s a pretty significant milestone, especially coupled with the fact that the PlayStation family of hardware in total has sold through 525.3 million units since the PlayStation One launched on in 1994 for Japan.

SIE President John Kodera released a statement on the console’s success: “I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the continued support from our fans and business partners, who have all contributed to PlayStation’s rich history. Without our passionate community, we would not have been able to surpass this remarkable milestone of 500 million units.

“PlayStation 4 Pro 500 Million Limited Edition has been created to represent our appreciation to our loyal fans. We will continue to make PlayStation the best place to play for all, as does our continued commitment to expanding our library of great games and variety of network services.” You can learn more about the limited edition PS4 by heading here.

Overall shipment numbers year-on-year have seen a decrease of 100,000 units, but strong software sales continue to contribute to revenue. Sony also increased its forecast for consoles that would be shipped by the end of the fiscal year (March 31st 2019) from 16 million to 17 million units. With high-profile exclusives like Spider-Man and exclusive deals for titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Destiny 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2, the company has a lot to look forward to.
