Mass Effect 3
I, personally am not looking forward to any game next year as much as I am looking forward to Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect 1 and 2 are two of my favourite games of all time, the latter being the best game I have ever played, period. And with ME2 often regarded as the best RPG of this generation, and sometimes even of all time, Mass Effect 3 will definitely be a hot topic next year. BioWare have promised an amazing conclusion of epic proportions, and we have no reason to believe they’ll fail to deliver. From everything we’ve seen so far, Mass Effect 3 looks like a hell of a game, one that shouldn’t be missed by anyone, and it definitely looks like it’s going to be the best game coming from under the BioWare banner.
Inversion
Inversion came out of nowhere, getting a low profile announcement at E3 and little hype ever since, but for some reason, it’s slowly looking more and more like what will turn out to be the biggest surprise hit of 2011. It takes the tried and true cover shooter mechanics of popular franchises like Gears of War and Uncharted and throws its own unique ideas into the mix. Gravity based shooting and cover mechanics sound like an awesome idea- used in set pieces, they’ll blow your mind away. But used as normal, in-game mechanics that can be used anywhere, anytime, and you have one of the most unique and fresh ideas in the shooter genre in the past few years. And who wouldn’t want to play a game that looks like a mixture between Inception and Gears of War? Epic win.
Final Fantasy XIII-2
It’s difficult to believe that even after the debacles of Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIV people would have faith in the series. It’s been disappointing its fans for a long time now, and no single main game in the series released in the past many years has managed to please all FF fanatics. FFXIII-2, however, looks awesome. It’s going to fix everything that was wrong with FFXIII- it’ll have an open world, non-linear environments, towns and cities, and from the looks of it, a great story and an even better cast of characters. From everything we’ve seen so far, it looks like it’s going to be vintage Final Fantasy, and that is what excites us.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Fans cried foul every time Konami showed new updates and tidbits of this new game in the long running series, and they absolutely went berserk after it got a re-reveal at the VGAs, getting renamed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and turning out to be an all out action game. It’s clear that as far as gameplay is concerned, MGR will have nothing to do with the staple stealth gameplay of the Metal Gear Solid franchise. And with no Solid Snake, long time fans of the series will have little to like in the game. But let’s face it- it still looks good. Hardcore Metal Gear fans might send me death threats for writing this, but seriously- has Platinum Games ever made a bad game? And would Kojima really let them take the series in the wrong direction? Have some faith, people.
