The Hook Man
Back when Resident Evil 4 was more of a hallucinatory experience, the Hook Man was meant to be an otherworldly presence that could teleport. Interestingly, Yasuhisa Kawamura, who wrote the scenario for Resident Evil 3, was behind its creation. He told Project Umbrella that Hook Man was just “an experiment” with no real backstory, inspired by the movie The Lost Souls. Supposedly, the purpose of Hook Man was more to show off the game’s special effect and its QTE system (which, of course, the final Resident Evil 4 went to use on liberally- almost excessively), and was never actually meant to be in the game as an actual enemy. In that version of RE4, now colloquially referred to as Resident Evil 3.5, Hook Man was supposed to be a hallucination that would appear to the infected Leon, and would be a nearly undefeatable enemy (though he was supposed to be vulnerable to light). Unfortunately, development for this version of Resident Evil 4 became too costly and it was rebooted with Shinji Mikami’s scenario taking center stage. Sayonara, Hook Man. We barely knew thee.
