The Resident Evil franchise has been nothing short of a juggernaut in recent years in particular, with Capcom having put out one major hit after another, but with the Resident Evil 4 remake and its Separate Ways DLC now in our rearview mirror, what’s next for the survival horror franchise? That a follow-up to the Resident Evil Village is in the works is all but a guarantee, and prominent Capcom insider Dusk Golem has provided some potential new details on its development.

As reported by Insider Gaming, the insider claimed in recent messages on Discord that Resident Evil 9 – or whatever it ends up being called – has the largest budget ever for any Resident Evil game to date, and is set to be the most sizeable entry in the series.

Dusk Golem also reiterated some details that they’ve previously shared, such as the fact that the game is currently targeting a 2025 release, and that a 2024 launch is unlikely unless development moves faster than what’s internally expected (as was the case with the aforementioned Resident Evil 4 remake, according to the insider). The insider also reiterated that Resident Evil 9 is also supposedly going to have the longest development cycle ever for a Resident Evil game, having allegedly been in the works since as far back as 2018.

The insider also added that the title is going to be “a closing chapter” for the series as it looks to tie off a number of arcs, while also setting up a new direction for the future. Previously, Dusk Golem has also claimed that Resident Evil 9 could be the last numbered title in the series.

Since Resident Evil 7 revitalized the horror franchise back in 2017, we’ve only had two years without new Resident Evil releases – 2018 and 2022 – so it should be interesting to see how Capcom plans to fill out its release schedule next year if it is indeed planning a 2025 launch for the next RE game. Of course, the company has said that it plans to release a major unannounced title sometime before April, which could potentially be the next Monster Hunter game, so there’s that.
