Linear Narrative
It’s also a more linear narrative, one that’s concerned with expanding on the original game’s lore while presenting closed arcs for its characters. James Sunderland’s nightmarish purgatory was a reflection of his own inner turmoil at killing his wife, with the ultimate resolution being left up to the player (regardless of the ending). By comparison, Heather’s journey has a start and an end. The same goes for Claudia and even Douglas Copeland, the detective who accompanies her to Silent Hill. There is a deeper analysis to be had for the various themes and characters’ roles but a definite resolution is reached all the same.
