Skull and Bones

To say that the development of Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones has been a nightmare would be an understatement. Initially announced at E3 2017, the project has faced numerous delays, departures and rumored reboots amidst reports of toxic work culture and discrimination (which led to the removal of managing director Hugues Ricour). Unfortunately, it seems to have suffered another significant departure.

Two weeks ago, associate game director Antoine Henry announced his last day at the company on LinkedIn. Having spent almost 15 years at Ubisoft and working on Skull and Bones since August 2014 (when he served as lead game designer till July 2017), Henry teased moving on to “new exciting adventures very soon!” Other projects that he’s worked on include Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and its expansion The Siege of Paris.

As for the game itself, it’s been in development for over eight years by this point and cost $120 million for Ubisoft to develop as of July 2021. Insider Tom Henderson did provide some leaked details on its progression, ship types, exploration and much more though Ubisoft hasn’t said much aside from providing a fiscal year 2023 release window. Stay tuned for more reports in the coming months.
