In its latest earnings report, Square Enix has revealed that it has seen an impressive 88.6 percent jump in its income for the quarter ending on June 30th. The company has attributed this revenue to a few factors, headlined by the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S, which were revealed as having had a “solid performance”. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales was also noted as contributing.

Along with the strong performance of single-player releases, Square Enix has also said that its MMORPG, Final Fantasy 14, has been seeing quite a bit of hype thanks to the announcement of its next expansion, Evercold. The company noted that its “profits increased slightly due to the advance recognition of expenses to its planned release in early 2027”. Overall sales have also seemingly increased in what Square Enix has described as its “catalog titles” – older games by the company available on modern platforms.

The success of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s multiplatform release has likely been further helped by all of the details coming out about the Remake trilogy’s third part – Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. The title is set to bring a firm ending to the overall story, and while there have been rumors about potential post-launch DLC, director Naoki Hamaguchi has noted that any potential expansions will revolve around “untold” stories.

“The story will be concluded within the main game. We’re serious about concluding the series with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and we’re proceeding with development with that goal in mind.” DLC, on the other hand, will involve “a kind of spin-off focused on a specific character that depicts their untold stories. So, in case we do end up considering making a DLC, this is the kind of things that we’d likely attempt to do.”

As for what kinds of untold stories we can expect, Hamaguchi has spoken about how Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will bring in just about every spin-off, and even sequels like Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, into the main story.

“I don’t want to sit here and say it connects to this, it connects to that. But obviously, there are a lot of other titles within the 7 universe. So, we’re talking about Advent Children, we’re talking about Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core. And we want to bring all of those in and make sure we’re not leaving those out.

“And then on top of that, once we have all of those in place, we’re looking towards the ending. And then the question is, what kind of ending are we going to head for in Revelation that still has those ties? And I think that’s something that I really hope players will look forward to finding out.”

More details about Final Fantasy 7: Revelation will be showcased during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event later this month. In the meantime, check out our review of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s and Rebirth’s Nintendo Switch 2 versions. Also check out details about Revelation‘s FITS system.
