Despite releasing games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake last year, the ninth month period ending December 2020 hasn’t been the best for Square Enix. In its latest earnings report, it revealed profits were down by 4.3 percent year-on-year despite net sales seeing an increase by 33.7 percent. Operating income rose by 47.7 percent compared to the previous year.

Nevertheless, the publisher forecasts a 12.4 percent profit increase for the full year. Much of the company’s troubles can be attributed to lower net sales and operating income, especially with Marvel’s Avengers under-performing in the second and third quarters. Though the live service title is still facing issues, it continues to receive updates – the next War Table is set for February 16th, which should also provide details on the upcoming Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions.

Though MMO sales saw a decline in the third quarter, the division remains profitable thanks to recurring revenue from players. With Final Fantasy 14 rumored to be receiving a new expansion this year, it could help the company’s next fiscal year substantially. The announcement showcase is currently set for February 5th, 5:30 PM PST so stay tuned for more details in the coming days.
