Star Wars Outlaws’ City of Mirogana is “Quite Compact”, Focuses on Density Instead

"What we wanted to do is to have something that is very dense in activities rather than super expansive where you get lost," says creative director Julian Gerighty.

Open world games are often in the habit of being larger than they need to be, particularly when they’re coming from Ubisoft, but developer Massive Entertainment continues to make assurances that it’s taking a different approach with the upcoming Star Wars Outlaws. The action-adventure title will see players exploring the Outer Rim, which, as you might imagine, will mean visiting a number of different planets and locations. Obviously, not all has been revealed on that front, but details have emerged on one particular location in a recently published Game Informer preview, and how its design prioritized density over size.

The moon named Toshara, created for Star Wars Outlaws, was a location we saw quite a bit of when the game was unveiled last year, and Game Informer’s preview has now shed light on one particular location on the moon- its capital city of Mirogana, which it describes as “dense and multi-leveled”.

According to creative director Julian Gerighty, the Morigana map is “quite compact”, and rather than being too large and not having enough engaging content to justify its size, Gerighty says it’s instead “focused on providing a dense, busy city experience.” Interestingly, dense, bustling city environments is something that we can expect to see plenty of in the game.

“If you open up the map, the location that we’ve built for Mirogana is quite compact,” Gerighty said. “What we wanted to do is to have something that is very dense in activities rather than super expansive where you get lost, and there’s not much to do. It’s very, very focused on providing a dense, busy city experience.”

The preview mentions a number of activities and points of interest that players will find in Mirogana, including several different kinds of shops and vendors, arcade games, betting arenas, and tables where you can play the card game Sabacc. Mirogana also has a cantina, as will other cities that you visit throughout the game, with cantinas serving as “a central location for getting the lay of the land, gathering intel, and finding work.”

Previously, Gerighty has offered assurances that Star Wars Outlaws won’t be a bloated experience, describing it as “a very focused action-adventure RPG that will take people on a ride and is very manageable.” Apparently, every planet in the game will be the roughly the size of 2-3 zones put together in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

In Game Informer’s preview, it was also confirmed that Solo: A Star Wars Story’s Qi’ra, who was played by Emilia Clarke, will be featured in Outlaws, though Clarke won’t be reprising her role. Read more on that through here.

Star Wars Outlaws launches on August 30 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Make sure to get more details on its Gold and Ultimate Editions through here, and its season pass through here.
