Bethesda’s Starfield recently went gold, and preloading starts on August 17th for Xbox Series X/S and PC players on the Windows Store. While new information is pending, designer Emil Pagliarulo and design director Will Shen held a Q&A on Discord (transcription via Reddit) to answer several questions from fans.

Some of the new details revealed include how smuggling works. Smuggling involves contraband items and getting them past security ships orbiting settlements. You can hide them with different ship modules (and it seems that harvested organs are some of the contraband).

Pagliarulo noted that “specific items” marked as contraband are illegal “pretty much anywhere”, implying places where they’re not. The economy is “fixed,” but prices for goods (bought and sold) can change depending on your Skills. Of course, if you commit crimes, there is indeed a jail to go to.

“Yes, you can elect to go to jail or pay a fine when you’re arrested (or even resist arrest and try to escape),” said Shen. Pagliarulo said the Settled Systems functioned more like Skyrim than Fallout 4’s Commonwealth with laws, government and civilization. Interestingly, there will be “a couple of cases” where the team explores the “themes of crime and punishment in our futuristic universe.”

Starfield releases on September 6th for Xbox Series X/S and PC. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
