EA's leadership has reportedly set a target of 100 million players or more over a set period for the next mainline Battlefield.
According to Battlefield Labs players, the update also brought with it some files with references to a battle royale game mode.
Electronic Arts' Andy McNamara says the team is "focused on" Battlefield Labs, but "the community will know when the reveal is coming."
This change would, for example, allow a medic to avoid frontline combat by letting them use a sniper-rifle and maintain distance.
The primary purpose of the 72-hour one-time-only playtest will be to test the performance of Battlefield 6's pre-alpha servers.
The next entry in the shooter franchise will be "a pivotal step in delivering on our next generation of blockbuster entertainment," EA says.
Classic movement options like crouch sprint, combat dive, and landing rolls are also making a comeback in the Battlefield Labs playtests.
The first playtest as part of Battlefield Labs will take place for two hours and will be focused on the PC version of the game.
Electronic Arts has confirmed that the next entry in its flagship shooter franchise will arrive between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026.
Even after opting for a multi-studio approach to development, Battlefield seems to be in dire straits.
A "large portion" of DICE is reportedly working on the next Battlefield, which is seemingly in pre-production and has a modern/near-future setting.
