It’s been over a decade since the launch of the last game in the Elder Scrolls series, and clearly, it’s going to be an even longer wait before The Elder Scrolls 6 launches. Surprisingly enough, however, it seems fans of the series might still have a major new release to look forward to in relatively near future, because it’s been claimed that a remaster or remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is in development at Virtuos, the co-developer of Konami’s Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

The leak comes from a user on Reddit who was claiming to be an ex-employee of Virtuos’ studio in Paris. Though the post his since been taken down, the leaker’s identity was verified by the subreddit’s moderators.

As per the leak, Virtuos has a remaster/remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in the works that will allegedly use “a pairing system”, which means it’ll combine the original game’s engine and codebase (including physics and gameplay systems) but render the new visuals through an Unreal Engine 5 pipeline.

The leaker claims that Virtuos hasn’t yet made a concrete decision on whether the project, which is supposedly codenamed Altar, is going to be a remaster or a full-fledged remake. Depending on what it ends up being, the game will allegedly launch either in late 2024 or early 2025. Apparently, Virtuos-owned studio Black Shamrock is also helping out with the game’s art.

Of course, as is the case with any leak of such nature, it’s best to take this with a grain of salt for now, at least until we hear something official from either Microsoft or Bethesda. If the remake/remaster does end up being real though, it should be interesting to see whether it will be an Xbox console exclusive or if it’ll also end up coming to PlayStation consoles.
