The Last of Us Composer Says Part 2 Was “Just the Beginning”

Gustavo Santaolalla could possibly be hinting at more things to come for the franchise in the future.

the last of us part 2

The Last of Us Part 2 may have turned out to be a divisive game, but there’s little doubt that in all the commercial ways that Sony was hoping, it turned out to be a smashing success. It would be a big surprise if they didn’t greenlight a third game in the series following that, and it seems a man closely associated with the Naughty Dog property might be teasing something similar.

Gustavo Santaolalla, who composed the iconic music for both The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part 2, recently took to Twitter to congratulate the game for being nominated across multiple categories in The Game Awards (including Best Music and Score). Interestingly enough, he ended his tweet by suggested that Part 2 was “just the beginning.”

It’s entirely possible that Santaolalla is referring to the upcoming The Last of Us TV series for HBO, for which he is also serving as composer, but one can’t help but wonder whether he’s hinting at future plans of a third game. For what it’s worth, series creator and director Neil Druckmann has suggested in the past that Naughty Dog’s next game could be The Last of Us Part 3.

It’s worth noting that Naughty Dog have no plans to release DLC for The Last of Us Part 2, so if they wanted to could immediately move on to the next game in the series (unless they want to focus on something entirely different first). There is still the Factions multiplayer mode’s return that they need to deal with, though, which raises some questions.

The Last of Us Part 2 is currently available on PS4. You can read our review of the game through here.
