HBO’s first season of The Last of Us wrapped up a little over a week ago, but excitement is already mounting for what the future holds for the acclaimed adaptation of Naughty Dog’s video game franchise. A second season was officially greenlit in January, and while details on it are currently scant, actor Bella Ramsey, who plays protagonist Ellie on the show, has given a vague idea of when to expect the next chapter of the story.
Speaking recently on The Jonathan Ross Show (via VGC), Ramsey said that shooting for season 2 will likely begin at the end of this year, which means the season is unlikely to premier anytime before the end of 2024 or early 2025.
“It will be a while,” Ramsey said. “I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next. And then it’s a long [process], it’s like a year filming, so it will be probably the end of 2024, early 2025.”
As for what the second season’s story will entail, co-showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have previously confirmed that the entirety of The Last of Us Part 2 will not be covered in season 2, and the story is likely going to span multiple seasons, though the exact number hasn’t yet been specified.
Meanwhile, The Last of Us Part 1 is set to launch for PC in week’s time, while Naughty Dog and Sony will also be unveiling a standalone The Last of Us multiplayer game later in the year.
