The NPD group have released new data for video game software and hardware sales in the US across the month of June (via GamesBeat). As the biggest release of the year – and among the biggest this entire generation – The Last of Us Part 2 was guaranteed to enjoy strong sales. On top of record-breaking debuts in the UK and Japan, it sold 4 million units worldwide in its first three days.

In the US, too, the game had an impressive launch. It was the best-selling game of the month, and enjoyed the biggest launch in terms of dollar sales for any game this year. In fact, it’s Sony’s second biggest video game launch in the US ever, trailing behind Marvel’s Spider-ManThe Last of Us Part 2 has also immediately become the third highest-selling game of 2020 in the US.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Grand Theft Auto 5 are also in the top 5, surprising no one, while Mortal Kombat 11 in fifth place enjoys yet another month of strong sales. Returning to the charts is Ring Fit Adventure, with a new supply of stock driving sales in June. Meanwhile, thanks to Persona 4 Golden’s recent release on Steam, the Atlus RPG has also re-entered the charts at No. 18.

Overall, June continues the trend that has seen 2020 outperforming last year with software and hardware sales. Spending in June stands at $1.6 billion, up 26 per cent year-over-year, while year-to-date spending is currently at $6.6 billion, which is up 19 per cent year-over-year. This is also the highest total for the year-to-date period for any year since 2010′ saw $7 billion.
