The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Won’t Have Offline Mode or Bots

"Believable bots in games are incredibly time-consuming and difficult to do well," says Gun Interactive, which didn't want to compromise on the core game.

Sumo Digital’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is out next month, and while based on a completely different horror slasher franchise, there are similarities to Friday the 13th: The Game. As an asymmetrical multiplayer title, one side controls the Victims who must evade a killer from the Slaughter Family and escape.

However, one of the biggest changes from Gun Interactive’s previous title is that it won’t have bots or offline play. Speaking to MP1st, it explained, “We did not consider offline bots for this title. We learned a lot from Friday the 13th and the time required to make a feature like that. Believable bots in games are incredibly time-consuming and difficult to do well. This would have cut our main game features back dramatically, thus impacting the overall experience we wanted to create.

“That was our focus. Push the asymmetrical horror genre forward as much as possible. And that comes from an unwavering goal of creating a unique PvP experience steeped in the world of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.”

Never say never, of course – bots and offline play may arrive after launch, depending on the demand. Stay tuned for further updates.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre launches on August 18th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, Xbox One and PS4 while also launching day one on Game Pass. Gun Interactive has confirmed that the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will have Performance and Quality Modes for 60 FPS and 30 FPS, respectively. Frame rates for previous-gen consoles have yet to be confirmed.
