The Witcher 4

Development continues on CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 4 after it entered full production about a year ago. The team has seen a slight increase to 447 members, and based on the Unreal Engine 5 tech demo from last June, there are some promising ideas. However, what you shouldn’t expect is another surprise appearance at The Game Awards.

Last year saw the title’s first cinematic trailer debut and introduced Ciri as the new protagonist. This year’s show, set for December 11th, won’t feature any new content from the title, according to co-CEO Michał Nowakowski on Twitter.

Expressing his happiness to see The Witcher 4 nominated for “Most Anticipated Game,” he said, “Thanks to everyone who has already voted – your support means a lot to us. We won’t be bringing any new content to The Game Awards this year, but we’re, as always, excited to watch the show and celebrate this amazing industry’s great night alongside all of you.”

CD Projekt RED previously noted that the open-world RPG wouldn’t launch until 2027 at the earliest, so there’s still a way to go. It also clarified that the tech demo didn’t represent the game itself but rather “a first look at the cutting-edge technology” used to build the game.

Thus far, The Witcher 4 has been confirmed to use Unreal Engine Framework, MetaHuman, Smart Objects, Nanite Foliage, and more to build its world. More recently, the studio has hired Karel Kolmann, who previously served as game designer on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, as its new senior quest designer.
