Thief 4: 10 Ways It Can Better Its Pedigree

Improved AI

I'm not saying the AI was ever bad in the Thief games, but it really needs to excel in Thief 4

It’s the non-scripted nature of the Thief series that has always made the game world so enthralling. Happening upon NPCs having a conversation feels like a more natural way to progress a story than watching a pre-rendered movie. As a result of this need for random events the Thief games have always had fairly good AI, but that was years ago now. Thief 4 will need to make sure it has some spruced up AI patterns that are, not only on a par with the AI patterns of this generation, but also superior to them.

Persistent upgrades

Would this scenario turn out differently if Garrett had a metalblackjack instead?

The loot and trade paradigm is a popular one in games, and it has always suited the Thief series especially well. Whilst buying new supplies has always been an important element, it would be interesting to see how more persistent upgrades would go down in a Thief game. I’m not saying go for a full experience points and levelling up system, but having to balance between spending cash on needed supplies and more potent weapons and equipment could add another layer of strategy to the game.

Increased exploration

A backdrop like the city is just itching to be explored

Thief 3 brought a welcome free roaming element to the Thief games, allowing players to explore various districts of The City between missions. Though it was quite limited, it really helped to flesh the game world out a bit. Thief 4 would need to re-introduce this element, but make it even more expansive. A more sprawling environment with more side quests would go down a treat. We don’t want it too extreme though; there are enough open world games on the market already.

More varied environments

Another gloomy looking castle? Really?

The City has always provided a brooding and atmospheric setting for the Thief series. It’s not exactly budding with variety though. Between crypts, mansions and libraries you’ve got about every major locale covered. A fine line would have to be tread as there is a very distinct tone that needs to be maintained in the games, but a little more location variety would do wonders to Thief 4.
