9. Warcraft 3
Real time strategy games are arriving in their masses these days, but Warcraft 3 offered something very different. Previous Warcraft games were able to define the genre with their tight mechanics and satisfying strategic depth. Warcraft 3 was able to carry on this success, but it also added in a handful of RPG elements that brought the game’s complexities to life. The simple addition of experience and equipment for specific hero units gave the game an edge that popular mods like Defence of the Ancients can thank their entire existence for. If it creates a whole sub-genre, it deserves a place somewhere on this list.
