Yes, Bungie effectively smoked and mirrored all its fans with the incredible E3 demo. And yet, Halo 2 was a momentous occasion for the franchise. The campaign was enjoyable enough on its own, with the Arbiter serving as an incredible addition to the narrative, but multiplayer is what truly changed the game. On top of cementing itself as an incredible competitive shooter, it helped popularize online console gaming, the Xbox brand, you name it.
