Ikaruga
One of the most hallowed shoot ’em ups ever made, Treasure’s Ikaruga first released in 2001 for arcades in Japan. It didn’t take long for its quirky polarity-based gameplay – where players could shift between black and white colours to either absorb bullets or deal more damage depending enemy colours – to catch on. It may only have five stages with three difficulty modes but Ikaruga is a masterpiece in terms of design, encouraging some strategic shooting.
