Microsoft’s Claim of Xbox One Becoming More Powerful Using The Cloud Is ‘Technically Correct’

Shadowrun Returns creator Jordan Weisman explains why.

The Xbox One has faced several controversies in the past year or so since it was unveiled, but one of the few remaining issues has been the purpose of Cloud computing. Microsoft has told us time and time again the Cloud computing can be used to make the Xbox One console several more times powerful even with the hardware remaining the same. But is it really possible?

Turns out, even according to some one with limited knowledge of the Xbox One’s architecture, that it very much is possible. Harebrained Schemes founder and Shadowrun Returns creator Jordan Weisman was recently asked about the same by GamingBolt and responded that, “I think that you have to pull apart those marketing statements pretty specifically, and I should start with the giant caveat that I am not in any way fluent in the detail of the architecture for the Xbox One.

“In general, if you have a high bandwidth connection and they’re devoting server-side processing power to support what’s running locally on your machine, it’s technically correct. Your local machine could offload tasks to a server on the other end, which could execute it and send it back, where it is anything from pre-rendered videos to computational components to quote ‘enhance or multiply the processing power of your unit.’ I think that’s just a generic truth, regardless of what the specifics in their box are to anybody else’s.

So in short, technically speaking it’s very much possible that the console can become more powerful using the cloud. But before that we need to see something practical happen. Microsoft had promised in the past that they will show a demo of the cloud’s potential but that did not happened at GDC. May be we shall see something at this year’s E3.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Stay tuned for our complete interview with Jordan Weisman and let us know in the comments below.

Apparently the cloud dissipated, oh well better luck next time Microsoft.

  • Millenia Blue

Well! the Xbox One needs all the help it can get! I hope the next Xbox Don’t follow the Xbox One’s hardware design!

  • sd

    Storms always follow clouds.

  • brianc6234

No matter what the cloud does the Xbone will never be close to the PS4. The RAM is way too slow compared to the PS4’s RAM. The cloud can only help in tiny things and you must play online. If you play single player games you can forget about the cloud.

    • Gamez Rule

You can still play single player games through the cloud.

    • Maverik256

so esram is now slow? Can run 3GB tiled resources using only 16MB per second. Xbox one was designed for future software. The future is the software not the hardware. Yes Sony will get better software but they have always needed more hardware to match Microsoft because MS software developers are the best in the world. what they were able to do with 512MB of ram in the 360 was nothing short of genius. imagine what they will get out of 8 GB??????

    • Gamez Rule

The 3GB tiled resources using only 16MB ( theory video ) is what you are going on about, while PS4 has partially resident textures ( you know it as ( tiled resources ) built into it’s hardware, and already being used in games.☺

    lol teh cloudzzzzz

      dem klaudsss

  • Gamez Rule

“If the cloud is unavailable to its rivals, it is unlikely to be used in
third-party games and the Xbox One is unlikely to benefit outside of a
few exclusives. If Microsoft does extend its cloud service to other
platforms, it loses the computing advantage claimed for Xbox One”

“Microsoft needs to prove its position with strong ideas and practical
demonstrations. Until then, it’s perhaps best not to get too carried
away with the idea of a super-powered console, and there’s very little
evidence that Sony needs to be worried about its PS4 specs advantage
being comprehensively wiped out by “the power of the cloud”. http://pictures.picasion.com/pic69/d4d0b4601d1400bbf22b56f0aa3f6b45.gif

Yeah and look at how poor that turned out.. Screen tearing, poor framerates, pixelation, ect..

    • Johnny

You are clueless and lost and are about the most useless idiot I have ever seen.

    • Gamez Rule

Wow, for showing the flaws of a game you come out and rage while throwing your toys out your pram trying to insult me LMAO!, well what can I say apart from, Johnny by name a johnny by nature☺

      Love it! Hahaha hahaha

    • Dakan45

yeah he is a complete idiot.

    • Gamez Rule

And you’re a complete tool so keep posting, someday you’ll post something intelligent!

    • You are flat out wrong

Don’t forget the horrific AI too. http://i.minus.com/iKtfm11gFlI7B.gif

    • Gamez Rule

Yeah, I was being kind to him LMAO!

    • Maverik256

The AI is dumb by design. If you play any MOBA in the world you will realize the bots never kill you they are there to draw attention away and use as a way to level up or in this case reduce titan time. but keep thinking they made the AI dump on accident if it makes you fanboy rants seem logical.

    • You are flat out wrong

“IT’S MEANT TO BE CRAP THOUGH”

But da powwa of da clawd though? God, I hope this bot crap doesn’t become a thing.

    • Maverik256

I have never played titanfall in freeze frame mode but when i play in in video mode many of the issues are minor at best frame rate is very good very little lag no host transferring and other issues you see in most FPS’s these days. Oh and for being 792P looks damn good also. No complaints from me or most the people WHO ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME and not just copy and paste images and text from other people.

    • Gamez Rule

I got it for PC ( ordered from Zavvi ) and soon sent it back while my brother, bought it for Xbone and got a full refund within eight hours. So yes I have played it ( 3 days ), and thought it was boring after a while. But even so the screenshots above are still 100% correct and true even if people own or do not own the game.

  • Tudim

The problem (for Microsoft) is, that there is no reason Sony cannot offload some of the processing from PS4 to “the cloud”, while XBone will always have weaker hardware…

    • ilovegoogleglass

You’re right but the cloud cost money. Sony has to buy licences to use the cloud. Renting severs from rackspace is not going to do. It’s best if they invest in their own cloud infrastructure….

    • Gamez Rule

As long as they continue too use OpenStack / AWS, ect and implement Gaikai into their own ideas some companies might want to use Gaikai in their own products like TVs, ect ( making Sony money back ) so IMO Sony are doing the right thing

    • Edonus

That is actually a problem for Sony.
They don’t have the network infrastructure. They could build it but it is very expensive and takes time.
The other thing is that X1was built with cloud computing in mind, it is designed to maximize the flow of data through the system. The Ps4 or any device for that matter can do bad use cloud computing but the effectiveness of it won’t have the same potential as the X1.

  • takeshikai

why is it that all fanboys claim to know more about the tech than the companies that make them? all your quoting is items of information you have read elsewhere and put it all together to form what you believe to be fact. Its extremely funny reading thats for sure. Most if not all fanboys have no idea of whats correct and what is false but like a fanatic, will stick by what they believe to be true, why don’t you take some time out, breathe and actually learn first hand what it involved before commenting. ID@Xbox event in London was extremely interesting and the possibilities that are available were eye openers.

    • Xtreme Derp

It’s not technically feasible, you can’t use FUD and conspiracy theories as a “durr you can’t possibly know this” shield.

Same nonsense as “you don’t REALLY know what’s in the Xbox, it could have special sauce and blow away PS4 any day now!”. Not.

    • Psionicinversion

FUD? Front Up Display i think alot of flying games use that…. what s new?

    • takeshikai

all i know is that compared to developing indie games on the 360, we now have a lot more available to us with the Xbox one than we had hoped. Alot of questions were asked and answered when we were at id@xbox event, a fair amount that is not common knowledge for most. will it blow away the ps4? i do not remember making that statement but, now that it has been brought up lets tackle that one. No it will not blow away the ps4 but it will bring the xbox one up to par with the other great console.

    • Xtreme Derp

There can’t be parity, the hardware gap will always exist.

Factual PS4 Hardware Advantages: +6 CUs, +560 GFlops (44% greater), +16 ROPs, +6 ACEs/CQs, better GPGPU support, better performing CPU, and faster unified memory.

  • ilovegoogleglass

I’m really starting to think that all launch games for Xbox one were supposed to be powered by the cloud or technically offloaded to the cloud to have superb graphics hence the always on feature. At E3 the Xbox One wouldn’t work without being connected to the internet. Like it’s all making sense know, the always on, don’t need a disc to play and game sharing. I won’t be surprised if their E32014 conference will showcase and bring back these features…

At one time forza 5 looked this good on the box….http://news.xbox.com/~/media/files/xboxonecloudhero.png?h=536&w=940

  • Thumbs_down_Fanboys

I read all these comments and laugh! I own BOTH the PS4 and Xbox One! I enjoy them BOTH! They are great machines! This “PS4 is better” garbage needs to stop if your a gamer just enjoy the games! If you can’t afford both systems buy the one you want and just game!

    • Xtreme Derp

The article is about MS’s BS “cloud” claims. People can and will call BS on them, cry more about it.

    • Psionicinversion

delusional, semi accurate, wrong, failed and basically mistersonymedi8a

  • Dirkster_Dude

For those who want a good example of what cloud computing can do for you: SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) project is a good example. The volunteer project used millions of home computers to crunch the data and return the information to home base. This was done in real-time in many cases. This is the type of resources Microsoft wants to leverage so “yes” it is definitely possible to offload resources and returning the finished product back to home base. And Microsoft has dedicated a lot of resources to make this work. Both Titanfall and Forza 5 use the cloud set up by Microsoft for the XB1.

    • Xtreme Derp

      Nowhere near the same thing.

    • Dirkster_Dude

And once again someone who doesn’t understand and doesn’t want to understand how programming works.

    • Dakan45

he is a clueless sony drone with no idea what he is talking about, he is delusional he has no idea about how programming and graphics work.

    • Psionicinversion

wheres your list of insults cus i was reading ya comments a few days ago against a few people and it was so damn funny lol

    • Psionicinversion

ps4ail bot, go back to your unicorns and never never land cus tyoull think x1 will never improve… unlucky its al;ready happenign

    • Dirkster_Dude

When you learn to type and use English grammar let me know and I will respond because I have no idea what you’re talking about.

    • Psionicinversion

not my fault you delusional, wrong, illusionist to the master degree and false hopes

    • Dirkster_Dude

Well it is not my fault you can’t use proper grammar and and are wrong, illusionist to the master degree and false hopes.

    • Psionicinversion

im bad at english? having 2 ands next to each other in the same sentence is wrong…

    • Dirkster_Dude

The problem with your English is that it isn’t understood that well even by you, but hey keep working on and someday you will be able to communicate well I’m sure.

    • Xtreme Derp

Dumb as a brick trying to compare distributed computing to partially remote rendering. You couldn’t be more of a delusional, worthless, wrong imbecile.

    • Dirkster_Dude

I think you’re dumber than a brick trying to compare my intelligence to yours and not thinking it all the way through and this means you couldn’t be more delusional, worthless, wrong imbecile, or use proper grammar because obviously no one taught you better or you lack basic understanding of English.

    • Xtreme Derp

trying to compare distributed computing to partially remote rendering then insulting someone = ignorant, doesn’t understand jack, delusional fanboy gobbling up MS PR “cloud flavored” feces

    • Dirkster_Dude

If it makes you feel better that you can be right and ignorant I’m okay with that. Up to you.

    • Psionicinversion

i dont want the power of my PC powering a an Xbox’s gfx tbh

    • Dirkster_Dude

The only difference between your PC and the XB1 or PS4 is that the latter is a fixed platform.

    • Dakan45

completly the same thing. you ae typically clueless and delusional as usual

    • Psionicinversion

theres one glaring problem with SETI, lets say you download a chunk of data that has proof of life in it on another planet… then you just discard it, uninstall or whatever losing the data then thats lost so good but bad in a way

    • Dirkster_Dude

Since you said then it must be so. Hmm… I’m going to go with no on that.

    • Psionicinversion

well dont you get unique chunks of data to process? if that data doesnt get processed then surely its lost?

    • Dirkster_Dude

Believe what you want. I’m sure you have the capacity to disagree with me.

    • Psionicinversion

      of course i do haha

    • Dirkster_Dude

Nanny, nanny, boo, boo. Last word – I win! 🙂 ** Unless you type some more **

  • David Gourde

They said “could”, they say it all the time, but they never used it, and never say they plan on doing so. They even say “technically correct” and not “correct”, I’m pretty sure they have this in mind, but they are not going to do anything that way since it would cost surely way too much. Still, I’m pretty sure next gen (xbox two? PS5?) will have that at 100%. I’m happy Sony is gonna do something similar with Playstation Now. Would be nice if we could play the PC version (graphically) of PS4 games instead on PS Now (totally possible) haha. I suppose not, as devs won’t want to work for nothing. Maybe on next-next gen we’ll see that as a standard.

    • Psionicinversion

dont think streaming games work well for open world games i think was said a while back

    • Gamez Rule

Well they ( open world games ) did work well by streaming and Gaikai proved that back in 2012 like I pointed on here.

      http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/games/1290997/gaikai-streams-lord-of-the-rings-dungeons-dragons-mmos

    • Psionicinversion

i tought only lnear games worked well with back porting stuff like ps3 games?

    • Gamez Rule

As I’ve shown you below ( in another post ) Gaikai streamed MMOs with no problems.

    • Psionicinversion

you lie, you lie like a japanese watch!!

    • Gamez Rule

      Bless ya,

    • Psionicinversion

hey sim city offline version availbale for download. A game worth downloading form EA!!! the cost of sim city or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cCL0T2pVP8 is redicukous especially with the tons of DLC purposely cut out just to sell it back to ya

    • Gamez Rule

      Only on PC LMAO!

    • Psionicinversion

Funny thing is sim city and the sims will never come to consoles…. cus i dont think sony or MS would allow the amount of DLC pi$$ taking EA do on there system

    • Gamez Rule

Even if they did I wouldn’t touch erm.

    • Psionicinversion

did you watch that video the end is so funny… by the end of this generation i can spend another $60 and not even have to install the f’ing game to complete it lmao… he makes me laugh so much.

sim sh***y 90% downloaded. I wouldnt buy it cus i get bored dead easy on that stuff so id prolly play it for a few hours then not load it up again so actually renting a game would be good for me, prefer to d/l it but only got 700KB/s till my estate is built then ill get virgin media 15MB/s download 😛 (150Mbit)

    • Gamez Rule

Wow, that’s a low B-Band. Can you not get Sky Cable?

    • Psionicinversion

no its a new estate so cable was laid around here like 10-15 years ago theyve laid the coaxial but it need to have a complete circuit and the cabinet which will house the cable modems isnt built yet cus its in the building site, same for BT infinity theyll build the fiber cabinet in a part of the estate that isnt built yet so got wait.

    • Psionicinversion

watch this one as well its so funny as getting so true about games https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGGfwPIykAo

  • You are flat out wrong

Technically correct, sure. Practical? Probably not. Not for some years yet.
